In a world, where humanity is struggling to survive, one man… hold up, that is way to cliché, but this is what I initially thought when I first heard of Attack on Titan. The new anime by Wit Studio seemed very cookie cutter when I first heard of it, humanity, on its last legs, a stronger race threating them, and a hero who is determined to save them all because they ruined his life somehow. But I guess that’s my fault for judging a book by its cover. Attack on Titan brings a unique telling of humanities struggle and actually makes you as the audience feel for how hopeless a situation against these giants can feel.

The main character Erin is an angry, angry little boy when we first meet him. During this time we learn about how all of the human race, or as far as they know has been relegated to a castle town consisting of three cities. Humanity has built these three cities in a giant circle, with a 50 meter high wall to keep the giants out, and for the past 100 years, that plan has been working pretty well. Then a colossal giant who is taller than the wall comes, kicks out the front gate and lets the smaller giants in to feast on the humans. This scene really nails it to the watcher than Attack on Titan isn’t about a hero rising up against all odds; it’s about humanity struggling to survive against an enemy that is much stronger than they. You start to feel the same despair and frustration that the people in the series do.

A particular thing about this show that I absolutely love is the sense of scale. The giants actually feel huge; they tower over buildings, make humans look like ants, and with their pseudo-human appearances they’re scary. This is especially true in episode 5, where Erin actually takes on one of the bigger versions. It was very reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus for me, which, in its own medium, was able to also portray scale perfectly. Also the story does a great job of letting you in on the lore of the humans in this universe. How they have been struggling, how they have learned to try and combat the titans with their Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear, and my favourite, in the commercial break segments they have info graphics teaching you the more detailed information of the different weapons they use, and the different politics of each ring.

Action in the anime looks great as well, while the soldiers are using the Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear you get a real sense of the speed and danger they are in, even while just going from point A to point B. Since the only way the humans know how to kill the titans is by slicing the back of their necks, this allows for some great sections of acrobatics as they dodge attacks and try to position themselves for the killing blow. I should warn viewers that blood and dismemberment are not something that the show shies away from. While it is not as detailed as something like Gantz, the show does still have depictions of people being eaten and losing limbs; but these scenes feel right in the general tone of the show.

Overall Attack on Titan was very enjoyable. I’m interested to see where the anime goes from here since it leaves every episode on some pretty crazy cliff-hangers (I’m looking at you episode 5). Just remember that this anime is more about tragedy than it is about a hero overcoming the odds. So if you’re not into that, or cannot handle gore or overall despair, this may not be for you.

It’s judgement time this week at the TNIAB headquarters as we review the 2012 remake of the movie DREDD.

The team then speculate on some of the new revelations found in the second Iron-Man 3 trailer, realize they’re out of touch with the current anime mecha with the reveal of Super Robot Wars UX and find that they might have a reason to venture back into the world of Skyrim with the 1.9 patch.

PICKUPS

Super Robot Chogokin Gunbuster - This is one really great figure. He comes with all the accessories you would need in a GB toy and is super pose-able. Definitely one of the better SRCs and I recommend this figure to anyone would wants a GB or can’t afford the larger Soul of Chogokin. Sure this one can’t transform but honestly were the separate buster machines all that special? If you want ot know more, check out my review here.

Transformers FOC Soundblaster - To be honest I wasn’t at all interested in the this figure. As of late, retail transformers have been all been terrible if you ask me. So why did I buy it? Well, last month I made the decision to drop my pre-order for the Masterpiece Soundwave and heavily regretted it once reviews start to hit. Now I can’t find one for a decent price and this Fall of Cybertron Soundblaster was the closest thing I could find. At the time of this recording I still haven’t opened it and now I’m thinking I’ll just return this impulse purchase.

Figma Black Gold Saw - It’s always a treat to see Black Rock Shooter characters in toy form. Black Gold Saw is no exception and you can bet this is one I’m very much looking forward too. Let’s just hope Good Smile Company doesn’t delay all this release.

Tomb Raider - I’m a closet Lara Croft fan. And by that I mean I actually enjoy the games, not just her looks. However, I will admit many of them haven’t been great and at this point the Uncharted series has become the benchmark for third person action adventure games. But this Tomb Raider seems different. A true reset for the franchise and one that includes a re-imagined Lara for the modern generation. I can’t be more excited for this game.

D-arts Mewtwo - With the releases of Figma Link & Samus, I got my Super Smash Brothers toy shelf started. Next in the line is D-arts Mewtwo. I’ll admit that this is one of the characters I’m less interested in because super articulated Pokemon just seem like a waste of time. Usually their designs don’t lend well to multiple joints and such. Mewtwo doesn’t look too bad though and he does come with a special Mew accessory!

This week we return to Gotham City and reivew BATMAN: The Dark Knight Returns PART 2. PART 1 was unanimously adored by the entire group when a couple months back and so is it the same story for the second half?

The team then discuss the merits of Jennifer Lawrence falling at the Oscars, Starcraft 2’s latest trailer and the dream of living in IKEA.

Finally, Anthony gets to reading the classic manga, Initial D, Vince watches the Star Wars Prequel trilogy (and even more!), and Blaven sums up his experience at another Magic TCG tournament.

RG Zeta Gundam (Model Kit) - I haven’t built a model kit in over ten years. Lately though, I have been feeling the need to try my hand at one and so I picked up this REAL GRADE Gundam. I absolutely loved building the entire set. It took much longer than I expected but I enjoyed every second of it. However, I have nothing but absolute dislike for the final product. It’s just too damn fragile. Now I don’t know what I was expecting but I guess I just forgot how weak this things end up being. Needless to say, I’m disappointed and I’ve accepted that the gunpla scene isn’t for me. On the other hand, maybe I just need to get into another type of model kit - Formula 1 cars?

Figma Silver Crow & Black Lotus - During the tail end of 2012, I absolutely fell in love with Sword Art Online. So while I was waiting for new episodes week to week, I ended up watching its sister series, Accel World, to get my MMO-based anime fix. Unsurprisingly I ended up liking this anime a lot as well and thus proceeded to get some figures from the series. These two figmas are pretty cool, but if I’m completely honest, I only grabbed them to hold me over until I can get the SAO figures!

The Last Story (Wii) - You know that guy who created Final Fantasy? Yeah, he made this game too. I’ve been very interested in this game ever since it was announced years ago, but upon its release I just kept putting off buying it. So when I saw it on sale for $20 on a random night in Wal-Mart, I bought it without hesitation. I don’t plan on playing it anytime soon but at least the next time I get the urge to lose myself in a JRPG, The Last Story will be waiting for me.

Super Robot Chogokin Gunbuster - Yeah I know I just got the definitive Gunbuster figure last month but this one is a much more anime accurate, super poseable, and is in scale with all my other six inch robots. Also, if you’ve been watching my YouTube channel then you’ll know that Super Robot Chogokin is my main squeeze at the moment when it comes to toys. That and I want to eventually make a Super Robot Taisen display with all my SRCs!

Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS) - Fire Emblem (GBA) is one of my favourite games of all time. I’ve loved every single one of the american ones released and none of them have ever disappointed me. The same is true of this entry as well. How do I know this? I can’t stop playing the demo. This is my most anticipated game of the year and I wouldn’t be surprised if it also manages to best.
