Tuesday Dec 30, 2014
This year in gaming has been weak, even with all the new consoles. But luckily there were enough stars in the pile of broken messes that allowed me to make a list of my 10 favourite games for 2014. I also want to use this paragraph to thank all of our fans who are into us enough to even read this as well as listen to the podcast. We love you guys and gals and we look forward to another year of "quality" content in 2015.
Honorable Mention: Final Fantasy Theaterhythm: Curtain Call (3DS)
10) Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix (PS3)
Kingdom Hearts and I have a love hate relationship. I love actually playing Kingdom Hearts but I hate the stupidly, overly complex story that surrounds this whole series. But the Final Mix versions of both Kingdom Hearts 2 and Birth by Sleep add so much to the game that it felt like I was experiencing them for the first time all over again. And just like the Final Fantasy X Remaster, I feel that this is what remakes/remasters should be, bringing that nostalgia factor back but still adding new features that you couldn’t get with the old games. It should go to show how good these games are that even 9 years after release they hold up enough to make it on my Top 10 list.
9) Threes (IOS/Android)
If you told me as a teenager I’d have a mobile game on my Top 10 Games of the Year list, ever, I probably would have thought you were a crazy person. But Threes is able to strike this balance of simplicity and complexity in a puzzle game that I have not felt since the days of Tetris. Also this game is the reason my phone would run out of battery at 2 in the afternoon….
8) P.T (PS4)
There’s something about the way P.T carries and presents itself that had me more terrified than any other horror videogame I’ve ever played. Maybe it’s the repetition of the same hallway, or the way the game uses everything the PS4 has to offer to scare the crap out of you. But I think it’s mainly the fact, which even to the time of me writing it there’s no one true way to defeat it and see the trailer at the end. Every run through you have a general idea but it might not play out exactly as it did the last, and that uncertainty is what scared me the most.
But P.T does its job so well that I just had to put it on this list not only because of the above, but also the fact that it actually has me excited for a Silent Hill game in this day and age.
7) Pix the Cat (PS4)
Pix the Cat was a total surprise to me, I just downloaded on a whim as a free PSN+ game and who knew that it would be up on my top games of the year list. The main mode feels like a remix of Pac-Man Championship Edition DX with a killer soundtrack to boot. It’s the perfect pallet cleanser game, even if sometimes I played it like a main dish instead.
And all the praise is only for the main mode. There’s also two other gameplay styles in this package that are more puzzle oriented than high score focused and they’re just as good! Pix is a must play for people who love high score games like I do.
6) The Wolf Among Us (Tons 0 Platforms)
I liked the first season of The Walking Dead, but I didn’t love it. That being said, I LOVE the first season of Fables: The Wolf Among Us. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that Telltale is working with great source material but the original story they have come up with is on par with the comic for me. Choices at the moment felt that they mattered and the story has me guessing all the way to the end.
They made me feel for Bigby Wolf, and I wanted what was best for him. That is an amazing accomplishment that not many games are capable of doing.
5) Crimson Clover: WORLD IGNITION (Steam)
If I’m the only person to have played this game in 2014 I’ll be very disappointed, but not surprised in the least. Crimson Clover is one of the best bullets hells I’ve played in a long time, and since we’re not in Japan there’s a drought of those in North America. It offers a lot of variety with different difficulties and game modes, but more so than that, it is just a blast to play. Gameplay is tight and bullet patters are tough but fair in medium difficulties. But I really just saying the term DOUBLE BURST when I talk about this game.
4) Dark Souls 2 (PS3)
My love for Demons Souls/Dark souls runs deep, and that is a lot of the reason that Dark Souls 2 makes it so high on my list even without having played the DLC. If you asked me what the main town was I couldn’t tell you but I can tell you intricate details on how I defeated certain bosses or areas or found some of the amazing secrets within the world. It’s a game less about the story and more about the experience and that’s what I love about this series and about videogames in general.
3) Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls (Tons O Platforms)
At one point Diablo 3 was a pile of hot garbage, then Reaper of Souls came out and got rid of the trash to reveal the treasure underneath. Reaper of Souls fixes all the complaints I had about the content in Diablo 3 and continues to add on more stuff from patch to patch. As well as doing other things like removing the Auction House, fixing loot drops, and making set items something you actually want to strive towards since they have really interesting and unique abilities. These changes finally make Diablo 3 a game I can recommend to people instead of embarrassingly telling people I paid money for it.
2) Bayonetta 2 (Wii U)
The only problem that Bayonetta 2 suffers from, is the fact that Bayonetta 1 exists. If it wasn’t for that this game would have been in the number one spot. Gameplay is super tight and its sense of scale has not diminished in the least. Also, how can you call kicking a fighter jet into the sky then riding angel horses until they explode not awesome?!
1) Bravely Default (3DS)
You know those people who are always saying “Man I wish Final Fantasy games were more like the old ones, turn based with none of this active time battle like FF13!”. Well tell those people to shut the fuck up and play Bravely Default because that’s what this game is and more. Part of my love comes from the nostalgia factor for the battle system but Bravely Default does so many interesting things with story, the job system, world and characters that it easily overtakes most classic JRPGS on my list of favourites. Not to mention the awesome street pass mechanics and optional side missions that are just as, if not more fun than the main game!
Also they have a character with amnesia named Ringabell, and that’s amazing.
