Three Nerds in a Basement We wanted a shot at internet fame, so here we are!

June 27, 2011

After a week of “free-casting”, episode 27 of the Three Nerds in a Basement podcast brings the return of the relatively new, structured format. To kick things off, Anthony was feeling left out so he decided to buy Super Robot Wars: Original Generation so that he could finally understand why Blaven and Vince were so hyped on the game. He’s also talking a bit more on Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. Next, Vince (being the big Transformers fan that he is) has played and finished the Transformers: Dark of the Moon movie tie-in game. He’s also bringing Samurai Sentai Shinkenger to the show and gives his opinions on this tokusatsu series. Blaven rounds out the What We’re Up To segment with the Trigun movie and also has his share of tokusatsu by talking about Kamen Rider OOO.

On the second half of the show we give our opinions on the Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds (one of two men Vince would go gay for). Then the group decides to talk about food that they enjoy. Also, if you live in the Toronto area, the crew even throws out some restaurant recommendations!

Lastly, the crew was a little heart broken to have no e-mails this week so instead we’ve left the listeners with some homework. All we’re asking you guys to do is watch some tokusatsu series and tell us what you think. We do recommend watching one of the two series that we’re watching as a group (Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger & Kamen Rider OOO), but if you feel like talking about something else or suggesting some of your favourites, that’s a welcome idea too (you can visit TV Nihon for downloads). Hopefully you all enjoy the show and we can’t wait to hear from you all!

After introducing a new structured format last week, we've completely abandoned it. In fact, we've got no structure this week, no segments and absolutely no content to speak of. I know what you're thinking, "Ahh, this must be a RAWcast!", but you're wrong. This is not RAW. This is FREECASTING. This is less an internet radio show and more a 'listen into what three friends talk about on a daily basis.' Enjoy.

Hopefully this can be a constant feature on the site. Check This Ish is where the TNIAB crew will tell you about how we either know so much about x topic or just give you the details on thing we think deserve some spotlight.

Hey guys, it's Anthony, on the podcast I tend to talk about fighting games whenever I get the chance, and I shoot out a lot of jargon people might not understand. So I thought I’d share with you guys the sites I find very helpful for getting better at fighting games and just understanding the scene as a whole. These sites are my favorite fighting game sites and should serve you with all the tools and info you need to learn a character in almost any fighting game.

Shoryuken

If you know even a bit about fighting games then you might have heard of Shoryuken.com. It’s the biggest site for the fighting game community and consistently updates with the latest news and cool videos from around the net.

The main appeal of this site is the amazing forum community that is constantly active. Forums are split up by game and then further split by characters within. This allows you to just have all the Yun info you need when playing AE without having to trudge through random “OMG YUN SO OP”. But of course the thing that makes these forums so great is the community, who constantly updates threads with new match up information, combos, frame data, and hitbox data. You’ll probably learn something new about your character or the game every time you visit the site.

Iplaywinner

Iplaywinner is a smaller site than Shoryuken, they cover news but also have a constantly great live streams of tournaments or casual games. IPW brings their own style to their streams; you won’t have your ESPN pro talk. It’s all about people getting blown up on stream and everyone just being really hype about fighting games. Also with their partnership with another stream group, Team Spooky, they are constantly bringing streams of tournaments for you to watch and study.

Their YouTube channel is also a great source of match videos from different fighting games.

Dustloop

This site is a little more specific than the other two. This is specifically for Arc System games who are the makers of insanely deep fighting games like Blazblue and Guilty Gear. Like Shoryuken this site has a great community in their forums that have already put in tons of information on every character in all Arc System games.

If you’ve ever needed to know what the hell a False Roman Cancel in Guilty Gear is or maybe the good times to use Gold Burst instead of always using your burst for defense in Blazblue you should check this site out.

----

I hope these sites will be of use to you as they have been to me. If all you want to do is impress your friends with combos or try to get to the top of the tournament scene in your game of choice, you should give these sites a read.

If you have any other fighting game sites that you love or just things to say about the sites above post in the comments.

Refreshed and restructured, episode 25 of the TNIAB podcast comes to you with a host of new changes. We’ve shortened the show’s length to a maximum of 1.5 hours and timed all our segments to keep the conversation moving.

This week, Vince opens up the “what we’re up” to segment by giving us his experience playing as a 1940s detective from the new Rockstar game L.A. Noire. Anthony then tells us how delighted he is to finally slay monsters with friends in Monster Hunter Tri. Lastly, Blaven admits that with real life soaking in all his free time, the only thing he’s been able to do is play with some giant robits on his GBA.

In the second half, Blaven & Vince give a rundown of the fifth X-Men movie, First Class – you might find yourself surprised with what they have to say about the film. After which, Anthony and Vince breakdown the events of the Electronic Entertainment Expo and give their opinions on the big show. Finally, the group answers some letters and close out begging you all to watch Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger!

Hopefully you all enjoy the show and if you have any opinions on the new structure (good or bad), don’t hesitate to write in and tell us.

Killer 7, Medaka Box, the Monaco GP, Dirt 3, Future GPX Cyber Formula, Senna, & Super Robot Taisen Original Generation are all the things we’ll be talking about on episode 24 of Three Nerds in a Basement.

Then in the second half of the show we tell you, the listener, about our experience at Anime North 2011 - some good, some bad but mostly entertaining. After which we jump into letters and have quite the discussion on a zombie outbreak.

In the interest of time, the editing of this show was very minimal. So if you hear long pauses and sound blips you can blame Vince for the former and blame Anthony's fidgety hands for the latter. Also make sure to stick around until after the credits to listen to the crew on a more personal level. As always, enjoy the show!
